How to take the remedies

1. Don't touch the pills.
Tip a tablet onto the lid or use a clean spoon and put it directly into the patient's hand or mouth. For small children, a tablet may be crushed between two clean spoons. Alternatively, put the tablet in a small glass of fresh water, stir until dissolved and take 1 teaspoonful – discard the rest.
2. Don’t return pills to the bottle/bag.
If they spill, throw them away.
3. Suck the pill
or bite it and suck the pieces. Don't swallow it whole.
4. Avoid food and drink
(except for water) and cigarettes for 15 minutes before and after taking the remedy.
5. Avoid using strong smelling substances
Over the course of treatment, try to avoid using substances such as camphor, menthol, eucalyptus or peppermint (you may need to change your toothpaste temporarily).

Taking remedies in acute illnesses
In an acute situation (e.g. sore throat, earache, 'flu), take one dose of the selected remedy and then wait. Observe how the patient feels. One of the following three things can happen:
i. The patient feels better. Do not repeat the remedy while there is improvement.
ii. The symptoms improve for a short time, and then get worse again. Repeat the dose at the same strength.
iii. There is no effect. Repeat the dose at the same strength. If there is still no improvement, try to find another remedy which closely matches the symptoms.

Sometimes after a remedy there is a general improvement and the patient feels better in themself, but the symptoms (eg fever, headache etc) persist. In this case, wait 15-20 minutes before repeating the remedy. There is no point in continuing to take the remedy once the symptoms have started to disappear - only repeat if they come back.
Don't be alarmed if children vomit or fall asleep after a remedy. These are good signs, and so long as the sleep appears to be restful there is no need to disturb them.
